Reed Switch Modification – “Handle with Care”

Reed Switch Modification is any forming or cutting of the Reed Switch leads.  Extra handling precautions must be taken when performing any modification to the Reed Switch.

Many times the user will often choose to make their own modifications, and only after manufacturing and quality problems with the product, do they go back and choose the approach of letting the Reed Switch manufacturer perform the value added requirements. 

Reed Switch Design characteristics

Reed Switches are extremely vulnerable to stress and breakage during the modification process. By design, the reed switch lead is much larger by comparison to its glass seal. The Reed Switch lead must be large in order to achieve its magnetic sensitivity and specified electrical requirements, as well as its mechanical strength.

Signs of Reed Switch Damage caused by modification

It cannot be emphasized enough; any forming or cutting of the Reed Switch leads must be done with extreme caution. Any visible cracks or chips in the glass are obvious signs that damage has occurred to the Reed Switch. However, internal damage can occur with no visible signs, which are caused by torsional, lateral, or translational stress to the seal. These stresses put force on the contact area which can affect the Reed Switch operate characteristics such as the Pull-In and Drop-Out, and contact resistance. Contact stress can also diminish the life expectancy of the Reed Switch.
